MacOS Sonoma is the newest version of macOS, released on September 26, 2023. Apple has included many updates like new desktop Widgets, a new Game Mode and upgrades to apps like Safari and Messages that’ll benefit all users. Apple says macOS Sonoma will only be available on a subset of Macs from 2017 or later. If your Mac is older than that, you might be unable to run the latest version of macOS by the end of 2023.
This article will discuss the features of macOS Sonoma and enhance your understanding of the upgrade.
In MacOS Sonoma, Apple has added some beautiful animated wallpapers showing worldwide locations. The wallpapers are related to cityscape, underwater and earth wallpapers. The Wallpaper is so unique that it might be the best reason to upgrade once it is released.
One of the most significant changes in Sonoma is widgets. Unlike macOS Ventura, where you can configure widgets only when you activate the notification centre, macOS Sonoma enables you to view these widgets on the desktop all the time. You can now add widgets and place them anywhere on your MacOS desktop from a Widget gallery like IOS. The widgets can adapt to the colour of your Wallpaper or background. Interactive widgets allow you to take actions directly from the widget, such as playing or pausing media or accessing home control directly from the desktop. The widgets fade into the background when you open the window to allow you to concentrate on the task and ensure they are not distracting. Using continuity, you add or interact with Widgets from your iPhone.
Apple added a new helpful feature called Presenter Overlay that allows you to customize the video feed; it’s an effect that separates you from the background of the content you are sharing. This feature enables you to present and share your work more effectively. It works on Facetime or third-party apps like Teams, Zoom or Webex. Moreover, a new reactions feature lets you use hand gestures to trigger animations during a call. The Screen Sharing Picker has been improved by simplifying sharing entire apps during calls. By simply clicking on the green button on the top left corner of an app, you can share it in the ring, which makes sharing content from their Windows easy.
Apple has made a considerable effort in Sonoma macOS to improve autocorrect by making it more innovative and efficient than ever. With its updated algorithms, this feature helps you correct the sentence rather than finish and fix the word. The user needs to stop typing for a brief second and then tap the tab button for it to autocomplete.
Apple has added more privacy features to its pre-existing private browsing feature in Safari. The new version of Safari includes Enhanced Private Browsing that locks your remote browsing windows when you are not using them. Moreover, the latest version of Safari completely blocks known trackers from loading on pages and removes tracking information added to URLs as you browse. MacOS Sonoma allows you to create profiles for specific topics. These profiles keep your browsing separate for issues like work and personal. Each profile can exist separately, which means bookmarks, history, extensions, tab groups, cookies and favourites. You can easily switch between those profiles without worrying that your work and personal browsing interact. MacOS Sonoma makes searching faster and more user-friendly. If you want to use web apps, add them to your MacOS dock.
The new version of the messaging app makes it easier to find what you are searching for as you have more search parameters. Search filters for people, keywords, and content types like photos or links help those with many messages to search. The app also allows you to swipe right to reply to any message. The app now has a new catch-up arrow that will enable you to jump to the first message you haven’t viewed in conversation immediately.
Apple has also updated privacy; the privacy and security section has an option for sensitive content warning. This feature can be enabled to help prevent users from unexpectedly viewing sharp images in messages. Moreover, Improved sharing permissions let you choose which photos to share and add calendar events without providing access to your entire photo library or calendar.
MacOS Sonoma brings in a wide range of accessibility features, making it more customizable. Those with hearing impairments can pair their hearing devices with their Mac. On the other hand, users with speech impairments can use Live Speech to type and voice their thoughts during conversations. The feature helps read aloud in FaceTime calls or in-person conversations. Users with vision impairments can easily modify text size across apps now.
MacOS Sonoma offers an advanced set of features that cater to power users. The above features will significantly impact workflows and make the system more enjoyable.
